Wash: A healthier future for south sudan

Discover how World Women's Team and Agriculture Mission South-sudan (W'TAMSS) is tackling waterborne diseases and promoting lasting hygiene practices in South Sudan. Join us in our mission to provide safe water, sanitation, and hygiene education to vulnerable communities.

Addressing critical needs

The lack of safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene practices have left a large proportion of South Sudan’s population at persistent risk of preventable waterborne diseases. Poor sanitary conditions pose a major public health risk, including potential cholera outbreaks. W'TAMSS's immediate priority is to provide safe drinking water and emergency latrines, and promote good hygiene in order to prevent outbreaks and the spread of water-related diseases.

Our wash initiatives

W'TAMSS plans to help communities build and maintain clean water systems, construct latrines, in addition to training and equipping hygiene promoters and cholera prevention awareness campaigns. This will be done both directly and through other organizations. We will provide training and support construction, but also encourage communities make contributions in cash and labour. Once complete, they will take up the responsibility of operation and maintenance.

Community-led solutions

The goal of these projects will be to reduce the health risks of water-related diseases and to increase the earning potential of households by saving time otherwise spent gathering water. Projects will also include educating people about good hygiene habits to reduce the risk of illnesses. W'TAMSS is committed to the concept of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach that is currently being pioneered by the WASH cluster and the government in many parts of the country.
